FAQ

How do I maintain my hardwood floors?

• When replacing furniture use felt pads on all legs.
• Use doormats at all outside entrances to trap dirt.
• Cover high traffic areas with area rugs but avoid using rubber-backed rugs.
• Vacuum and/or sweep at regularly.
• Remove spills immediately.
• Never use a wet mop to clean your hardwood floors.
• Do not use products that contain wax or oil soap. They will dull, stain and will make refinishing difficult.

Remember that water will cause your floors to buckle, stain and will create cracks in the finish.

The difference between water and oil based polyurethane.

Water-based Polyurethane

1. Clear, durable and moisture resistant.
2. Non-flamable at time of application.
3. May be used in bathrooms and kitchens.
4. Dries within 1-5 hours.
5. Does not have the odor of mineral spirits.
6. A sealer and 2 coats of water based polyurethane is the standard.
7. Available in high-gloss, semi-gloss, stain and matte.

Water-based Polyurethane

1. Easy to apply.
2. Durable and moisture resistant.
3. Ambers as it ages.
4. May be used in bathrooms and kitchens.
5. Dries within 8-10 hours.
6. Two coats is the standard.
7. Available in high-gloss, semi-gloss, stain and matte.

Cracks on between individual floor boards.

Most cracks are normal and seasonal. They show mostly during the fall and winter season when heating is required.

Cure: Add moisture to the air space.

• Boil a pan of water.
• Turn off bathroom exhaust fan.
• Open dishwasher after rinse cycle.
• Install humidifier to furnace.

Water Damaged Floors

• Drain water from below by drilling sub-floor.
• Elevate temperature.
• Use fans to increase air flow.
• Place exhaust fans in crawl space.

It takes 2 to 6 months for a floor to stabilize. Depending on the extent of the damage, the floor may have to be replaced or sand/finished.
